The new year is the perfect opportunity to dive into steps to create a healthier home for the upcoming 365 days.

It’s almost the new year, and if you’re thinking about what you’re going to do differently in 2025, know you aren’t alone. If having a cleaner home is one of your goals, the best way to achieve it is by establishing better habits. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry—we asked cleaning pros about the dirtiest spots in most homes and small changes we can all make that will have a big impact. Here are nine cleaning and organizing habits to adopt in the new year.

Establish a Cleaning Schedule

Alicia Sokolowski, founder and co-CEO of AspenClean, suggests kicking off the year by creating a cleaning schedule for yourself.

“To prevent getting overwhelmed by all the tasks you want to do, create a cleaning schedule," she recommends. "Schedule a few cleaning tasks for each day of the week, such as laundry on Fridays or cleaning the kitchen on Sundays. This will establish a routine that feels more manageable and less time-consuming.”

Plugging this into your calendar will help you commit to it and ensure you don’t forget.

Embrace the 'Clean-As-You-Go' Method

Do you often find cleaning the kitchen or bathroom overwhelming? Or does every cleaning session turn into a deep-clean marathon? If so, Sokolowski recommends going with the 'clean-as-you-go' approach.

“Some examples include wiping surfaces after use or cleaning spills immediately," she says. "This prevents mess from piling up, creating a healthier, consistently tidy home. This simple habit saves time, reduces overwhelm, and keeps your space welcoming every day.”
